Science and Economics of Precious Metal Cladding

By: Grigory Raykhtsaum

Precious metal clad materials share a significant part of the electrical contact industry markets.  Precious metal clads provide a substantial material cost benefit.  They also offer a combination of physical and chemical properties of precious metals that are essential for the electrical contacts with the desirable mechanical properties of base metals.  This presentation reveals the history of precious metal cladding, discusses the precious and base metal alloys that are commonly used to manufacture clad products and reviews typical processes and basic science of metal clad bonding.  The presentation illustrates some examples of clad material failure. It also discusses the aspects of economics related specifically to precious metal clad manufacturing.
